I n the dynamic landscape of digital marketing, finding one’s true calling can be a journey of twists and turns. For Jack Olrod, Senior SEO and Content Marketing Manager at Next Chapter, this journey was marked by a blend of planning and serendipity. Join us as we delve into Jack’s unique path, his love for SEO, and his insights into working for an SEO agency.

Q1: How did you get into the world of SEO and marketing, was it planned or did you stumble into it?

A bit of both to be honest; initially, I pursued Architecture as a career that would combine my passion for art and mathematics. I tailored my sixth form subjects accordingly. However, I realised I didn’t want to spend another 7 years studying to become qualified, so I switched gears and began exploring Computer Science university courses.

After graduation, I found myself in a temporary HR role, simply to earn some income while I figured out my true passion. It was within the same company that I was accepted into a Graduate Management Scheme. During this time, I completed a personal project in marketing, sparking my initial passion. Over the years, that passion evolved into a specialisation in SEO and Content Marketing across various industries.

Q2: Did you always want to work in an agency, and if not, why?

I had always been curious about working in an agency but had spent most of my career within internal teams. After graduating, I remained with the same company for over six years, gradually progressing to the marketing department. It was my manager in this role, Matthew Goodwin, who first suggested that I might excel in an agency.

Since joining Next Chapter, I don’t think I’d return to an internal team, at least not for a while. I thrive in the fast-paced and challenging agency environment, relishing the opportunity to work with diverse clients that keep each day fresh and interesting. So, I have a lot to thank my first Marketing Manager for.

Q3: What is your favourite thing about working as part of the Next Chapter team?

I love collaborating with a diverse group of clients. The variety of projects we undertake keeps each day new and challenging. Plus, the office is conveniently located just 15 minutes from my home, making for a dream commute.

Q4: Is there an SEO marketing tactic you would love to try, but haven’t found the right opportunity to yet?

I’ve always been intrigued by the potential of targeting less commonly used platforms like Reddit to share information and build authority. However, I believe this tactic needs the right company and industry context to be truly effective.

Q5: What industries are you personally interested in? And is there any you would like to work with which you don’t already?

I’m open to exploring a variety of industries, as I enjoy trying new things. Industries like Video Games, Music, TV, and Film would present exciting challenges. They align with my personal interests and would require me to acquire a wealth of new skills.

Q6: What do you enjoy doing the most in your free time?

My favourite pastime varies with the weather, but currently, I relish the opportunity to read a good book or comic while basking in the sun. I’m particularly fond of escaping into the fantastical worlds of novels, much like those in “Game of Thrones.”

Q7: What is your favourite thing about the SEO industry?

This might be a bit controversial, but I love the ever-evolving nature of the industry. Every time a new algorithm update is released, it’s exciting (and sometimes terrifying) to see what’s changed and find ways to create better content to rank higher.

Q8: What tips would you give someone who is interested in working for an agency or in marketing?

Expect occasional setbacks and don’t be disheartened when things don’t go as planned. Learn from these experiences. Marketing is constantly evolving, and it relies on shifting consumer opinions. Be flexible, agile, and prepared to make quick decisions to achieve bigger successes. Take risks and embrace the opportunity to stand out from the crowd.

Q9: Where is your favourite place to go on holiday? (UK and Abroad)

In the UK, Porth Leven in Cornwall holds a special place in my heart. It’s a picturesque port town, and my partner used to live there. We try to visit once a year.

Internationally, I enjoy exploring new destinations, so I rarely return to the same place. Barcelona and Amsterdam have captured my heart, but my next adventure is set for Cape Verde, a place I’ve yet to explore, and I’m incredibly excited about it.

Q10: Working in an agency with a diverse client base can be challenging. What is key to achieving success for clients?

First, immerse yourself in your clients’ businesses and consider yourself part of their team. Be flexible and agile to meet their needs and deliver the results they seek. Communication is crucial—keep everyone informed about decisions and strategies you’re implementing.

Q11: Just for fun – which 3 people would you invite to your fantasy dinner and why?

My first two choices are deeply personal. First, my ‘Nanny Jack,’ who passed away when I was around 8 years old. I’d love for her to see how much I’ve grown and just talk to her again. Second, my Mum, so she could reunite with her own mother, who would also be in attendance.

For the third guest, I’d choose someone from ancient history to gain insight into life back then, and to challenge the assumptions and interpretations made by historians. Ancient history has always fascinated me, so someone like Tutankhamun would be incredibly intriguing.

Q12: What are some of your proudest achievements/memories since working at Next Chapter?

Every day I spend here, I feel proud of our team’s achievements and the remarkable results we deliver for our clients. However, one of my proudest moments is witnessing the progress we’ve made since the inception of Next Chapter. I joined just before the launch when it was just Daniel Swepson and me. Since then, I’ve witnessed its growth and contributed to building our team and nurturing strong client relationships.

A personal highlight is my involvement as a speaker in a GoNetwork online event. While it was a new experience for me and I felt apprehensive initially, the whole journey was exciting, and I’m proud to have been part of it.

Q13: AI is the talk of the town – do you think we are all about to lose our jobs?

No, I don’t believe so. While I appreciate the utility of AI as a tool, it can’t fully replicate creativity, and in marketing, creativity and fresh ideas are at the heart of a successful strategy. We should embrace AI to simplify our tasks, allowing us more time to craft innovative strategies.

Q14: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced while working at Next Chapter or since working in SEO?

Taking the risk to move on from a previous workplace that didn’t align with my personal goals and ambitions was a significant challenge. It was a scary decision but a necessary one. Subsequently, transitioning to an agency environment for the first time was also a challenge, but one that I embraced and thrived in from day one.

Q15: If you could meet yourself in 50 years and ask yourself one question, what would it be?

Jack Olrod: First, I’d inquire about next week’s lottery numbers, as a little financial windfall would be helpful. Additionally, I’d seek guidance on any activities I should avoid in order to prevent future regrets. It would be valuable to know in advance if certain activities might lead to unfortunate outcomes.

Q16: What would be your specialist subject if you were on Mastermind?

Probably something I’ve loved since being young, like Pokemon or X-men. I’m a big geek at heart.
